Older furnaces typically fire right up, but also waste so much heat that the hot combustion/exhaust gases easily flow up your chimney.
Your high-efficient furnace extracts much of the heat for use in your house, leaving combustion/exhaust gases too cool to exhaust on their own. Your furnace now uses a combustion blower to start the flow of exhaust gasses (usually out the side of your house through PVC piping) prior to the ignition sequence starting. This is one of several checks that your furnace makes to ensure that everything is operating safely and that no hazardous gasses end up in your house.
And, while the heat takes a little longer to initiate, your furnace and digital thermostat are much smarter than they used to be -- they learn how long it takes to warm your house and actually start the heating sequence a little earlier to maintain your comfort.
